Northborough Extended Day Programs

About Northborough Extended Day Programs, Inc.

The mission of Northborough Extended Day Programs (NEDP) is to provide high quality before- and after-school programs, nurture growth and development of children, and support families and caregivers in their parenting roles.  NEDP supports the community to better understand the importance and value of constructive “out-of-school time” for Northborough’s school-age population. NEDP allows children to participate in structured and unstructured physical activities and provides nutrition education.

NEDP Policies: Healthy Foods
In keeping with their commitment to make a positive contribution to children’s diets and health, snacks served during the NEDP place an emphasis on serving fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products as the primary snack, and water as the primary beverage. Juices offered are 100% fruit juice and milk is 1% or non-fat. A snack menu is posted at each program so that parents and guardians are informed as to the additional nutritious options made available.NEDP also offers a nutrition learning program that aims to equip the children with the knowledge, ability and intention to make healthy dietary choices. Snack activities introduce children to tasty and healthful foods in order to teach and enable them to select and prepare healthy snack foods for themselves. The nutrition education lessons are taught a minimum of once a month. At the same time, in order to encourage physical activity, children are not allowed to bring any electronic devices – such as cell phones, Game Boys, hand-held computer games and iPods – to NEDP.

NEDP Programs: Catch Kids Club
CATCH Kids Club (CKC) is now being offered as part of NEDP. CKC is an evidenced-based after-school, summer, and community recreation program designed to promote healthy physical activity and eating behaviors in elementary school-age children.
The CATCH Kids Club program includes:
  • 30-minute CATCH Kids Club structured physical activity a minimum of two days per week
  • Minimum of 30 minutes of unstructured physical activity in the form of gym time or outdoor play
  • CATCH Kids Club nutrition education lesson a minimum of once a month

During the 2010-2011 school year, sixteen staff members were trained on CKC and more than 120 children participated in the program. BHN’s evaluation suggests that this program has resulted in a decrease in time “sitting” and an increase in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during designated physical activity time.
