Healthy School Lunches

Building a Healthy Northborough works closely with Maura Feeley, the food service director for the Northborough-Southborough Public School District. Since taking the position in 2012, Maura has worked to integrate healthy food options into the school menus.

School Gardens

A major activity of Building a Healthy Northborough has been working with Eagle Scouts Mike Strickland and Mike Ryan, along with 40 other scouts, to build one school-yard garden at each of the four elementary schools. The school-yard gardens have provided teachers the opportunity to integrate gardening lessons into their classroom activities. In order to garner the educational potential of the garden, each school received lesson plans and learning resources.

School Wellness Program

School health advisory subcommittees are one means of planning consistent and focused efforts to influence children to lead healthy and productive lives. Using policy/guideline and health education assessment tools developed by JSI and approved by the newly formed School Wellness Policy subcommittee, Building a Healthy Northborough established and is now monitoring healthy eating and physical activity guidelines in the Northborough schools.  A full list of the guidelines can be found by clicking here.

In addition, the School Wellness Policy subcommittee assessed which components of the Massachusetts Health Framework are being taught in each of the four elementary schools.

Healthy Eating Program for Kindergarten-5th Graders

Bridget Owen, a Girl Scout in Northborough and a senior at Algonquin Regional High School, developed a healthy eating program as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. The program is tailored to three different age levels (Kindergarten-1st Grade, 2nd Grade-3rd Grade, and 4th Grade-5th Grade). She created the materials below for students at Peaslee and Proctor Elementary Schools and wants to share them with other children in Northborough!
